What to expect in therapy

Young children (and their parents)

The first session is a parent-only appointment, giving us time to talk through your child’s history, current challenges, and goals for therapy. This conversation helps me understand your family context and ensures we’re all on the same page before bringing your child into the room. In following sessions, I’ll work with your child in a way that suits their age, comfort, and communication style – often through play, drawing, movement, or storytelling. Depending on their needs and how they’re feeling, you may stay in the room or step out briefly while we build rapport. I’ll always keep you updated on progress and share strategies to support your child at home. Therapy with children works best as a collaborative process – your role is a crucial part of it.

Adolescents

For adolescents we often begin with a session that includes both the young person and their parent(s) or caregiver(s). This allows everyone to share perspectives and helps me get a balanced understanding of what's going on. From there, I usually see the teen one-on-one, giving them space to speak freely and explore their thoughts and emotions in a confidential, supportive environment. I take care to build trust at their pace – especially if therapy is new or if they’re feeling unsure. Parents are still involved – I’ll check in regularly (with your teen’s consent and comfort in mind) to ensure you feel supported and informed about how things are going.

Adults

Your first session is a chance to pause and reflect on what’s brought you here. We’ll talk through what’s currently going on, any past experiences that feel relevant, and what you’d like to get out of therapy. You don’t need to have it all figured out – many people start unsure of where to begin, and that’s completely okay. My style is collaborative, thoughtful, and flexible. Sessions might include talking things through, building emotional awareness, learning practical tools, or making sense of patterns that no longer serve you. This is your space – led by your goals, your pace, and what feels most helpful to you.
